Description

"Hey Aki, Love Whatever." is the second post-album-4 single by
alternative lo-fi indie band Shorthand Phonetics.

The A-Side, "Hey Aki, Love Whatever." is a 3-minute full-band rendition of a songwriting experiment conducted by Ababil Ashari. The song was constructed by asking random people on Facebook what their favorite words, chords and name was.

The first 9 people who replied (F. Ahmayuddin, N. Fadhita, M.R. Farhan, I. Kusumadewi, U. Mega, F. Oktavia, W.A. Pramardika, A.A. Rahadi, M. Sihotang) got their contribution to the experiments in the song.

For example M. Sihotang said his favorite chord was Bm7, hence the opening chord of the song was Bm7 (the full band version was recorded using a capo on the 2nd fret so the tonal chord is actually a C#m7). Another example was A.A. Rahadi's suggestion of the word "Devour" which is featured in the chorus line "Don't get devoured by your...".

After the results was culled, the song was written using the disparate answers yielding this new, off-kilter sounding track.

The B-Side, "Train of Thought of a Robot" was the result of experimenting with dual inputs to a single note output synthesizer. Way back in the 60s and 70s, the earliest synths could only produce one note at a time (chording was impossible) so, if there was two inputs at roughly the same time the synth would play the note struck relatively first then modify its output to the note struck second. The concept was that the main instrumental motif would be interrupted by a second randomly improvised input. Which yielded the psychedelic sounding solo sections of this track.

The harmonizing synths were contributed by outsider musician Citra Desy Allin.

The main instrumental motif was inspired by a piece of art by graphic designer Eric Wirjanata, also known from his music webzine Deathrockstar.info

The other B-Side "frombirthuntilthefinallie/i♥explosionsinthesky" was a composition experiment to answer the research question: "How long does it take for one person to make a fully mixed and conceptual post-rock track using imporvisational techniques and a drum machine?"

The answer: "3 hours and 13 minutes" (this trial was done while said person was sick with gastroenteritis so this time may actually be actually lower if the person was healthy.)
